Tonight is History

I was watching the match when Manchester United came from behind to beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final. It was a boring match, with the Germans playing very efficiently. I guess it was a miraculous year for the Reds, as they managed superb come backs against so many teams to win the treble that year. Heh, unfortunately, I didn’t even know what an offside was back then, and fell asleep in that match that made history. My soccer education only began during the 2002 World Cup.

Tonight I will be watching Barcelona face Chelsea and all my chips are on Barcelona to remove Chelsea from the next stage. I’d like to watch the AC Milan vs United match, but they’re not showing it on TV this time. United has not gone pass the quarter finals for 5 years now. It feels different tonight, with the overwhelming talent of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy, not to mention Paul Scholes and Roy Keane. Perhaps the weakest link of the team is the keeper, as neither Roy Carroll nor Tim Howard have been successful in keeping the ball out during those important moments (with partial blame going to the defense I guess). This is a technically superior team, although I think AC Milan is probably just as good, as you don’t just happen to be at the top of the Italian league without some super team.

Heh, the anticipation is really building up now. Another 8 hours to go.

* Update – Heh, it’s sad that the teams I support always go under. It was a classic match between Chelsea and Barcelona, with 4 – 2 the final score. It’s been said before, to win the Champion’s League, one’s team must be miserly in defence. Manchester United AGAIN conceded to a corner and even with all the star talent and pressure on the opposition team was unable to score.

Kudos to Chelsea though for a superb performance against Barcelona. Ronaldinho is still the most fantastic player on the pitch.
