An Empire Crumbles

Roman Abromavich’s millions again failed to lead Chelsea into the final’s stage of the Champion’s League. Again Chelsea fell in the semi final stage.

Two weeks ago Chelsea were my favourites predicted to be pitted against AC Milan, or even PSV Eindhoven (which we will know the outcome of by tomorrow morning if they beat PSV Eindhoven). Two weeks ago I would never have believed that Liverpool would once again be dominant in Europe. Heh, that is the world of soccer. Strange things happen. It is actually quite amazing what ONE man can do to an entire team. Jose Mourinho has already steered Chelsea towards Premiership glory, their first league cup win in 50 years. Liverpool may be 33 points away from Chelsea in the league, but their team outplayed a tired looking Chelsea that lacked creativity due to injuries of their star players in midfield. Rafael Benitez had redesigned a team that had been lack lustre for a few years under Gerard Houllier.

It will be an interesting season next year, with no international tournaments during the season’s break, so players will be fully rested and the full strength of any squad will be tested. Some of the world’s most decorated managers are in the English Premier league now. It used to be a two way contest between Arsenal and Manchester United, now Chelsea is a force to contend with and Liverpool may have better chances next year if not for the injuries that have plagued them throughout this season.

Manchester United has the squad players, and with only the possibility of Rooney and Ronaldo improving, there are good chances for a better season next year. While Arsenal has a small squad, they have always been a respectable force. Chelsea is most intimidating when Duff and Robben are in the starting lineup. Liverpool is becoming an all Spanish team, heh, with the signings mainly imported from Spain. Everton is currently fourth, but were near relegation the year before that. They will need to be consistent next season to be able to compete with Europe’s finest. Heh, who will be the champions next season?

Heh, soccer season is coming to an end with only the FA Cup final and Champion’s League final left to watch.

PS. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1 – 0, and it was a controversial sort of goal. Nobody knew whether the ball went in or not before it was cleared. Heh…
