Time Capsules

Yesterday was one of those days where nothing I planned (well, didn’t plan much other than to go home and nap… heh) worked out. Was out the whole day and my feet and knees ached pretty much from all the walking and standing.

Had dinner with some friends yesterday, and ended up volunteering off somewhere when I had no idea where I was going. For me, it’s the usual spur of the moment decision, and while I was dead tired, I thought it’d be nice to take some photos and to also see what exhibition was so interesting to my friend’s friend (long winded explanation).

Ended up at the National Gallery of Victoria to see an exhibition on Andy Warhol‘s Time Capsules. I’ve never really heard of the guy before so I did not know what I was walking into. He was some Pop Art icon of the day. Basically, this guy kept a collection of stuff he had collected over the years and put them into separate boxes which became known to be time capsules. He collected a really huge amount of stuff (bordering to what I’d consider junk and throw out at times, but that’s me, heh…) and I could see newspapers dating back to the late 60′s. He also made silent films of subjects that could span anywhere from 40 min to a whole 25 hours. One film was showing a motionless and expressionless face that would go on and on before changing to another face that did the same. There was also a film where the only subject was the Empire State building, and the only change in the film I could see was a day scene and a night scene.

It wasn’t a large exhibition, but it would certainly take you an entire day to sieve through all the contents of the stuff on display. There were mountains of letters, pictures, even a huge Campbell soup can candle! Walked away from the exhibition with the feeling I just saw it. It didn’t really leave much of an impression on me, other than noting some of the historical trends of the time period. Heh, not a very exciting way to spend $12 for entry, but it gives you an idea that such things exist.
