Sneaking In

Heh, trying to sneak in a post before I hop onto the plane to Brisbane.

This is one of those impromptu trips where I was sitting in front of my workstation one day and saw a good price to go to Brisbane. Told my friend (a couple of metres away) as I knew she had relatives there. 20 minutes later, the transaction was a done deal so me, her and her boyfriend had bought tickets to for August to go to Brisbane. That was on June 5th, more than 2 months ago.

Not sure what I’ll be doing over there, other than visiting the Worlds at Gold Coast (Warner Brothers’ theme park of sorts) and maybe supper. Heh, was told not to expect much in terms of scenery, but one just needs to be a little creative to pull of some nice shots. Will bringing my combo of the kit 18-70mm and my 28-200mm lenses to cover enough range for taking pictures. There is a large overlap with these two focal lengths, but that’s something I’ll live with until I get a 12-24, heh. Which is soon I hope. :)

Okay, off to grab a quick coffee and dumping stuff into my carry bag.

No pic today. English Premier League starts Saturday, heh, a new exciting few months of soccer for me. Yay!

Capturing Light

Every day at work I have plans for myself when I reach home. They are so vague that by the time I reach home, whatever catches my fancy takes over. Today I just spent the last hour and the half just looking at pictures posted by people on PBase (a picture sharing website). These are some of the most fantastic pictures out there, and it really inspires you to produce something magnificent everytime you put yourself behind a camera.

Taking photographs is a little like cooking. You look at the picture, and with whatever technical knowledge you hold, guess at the settings used to capture that moment. With PBase, it helps when people post these details on, helping you learn a little more about the photographic process. I’ve been eagerly collecting glass over the last few months, with the knowledge that these lenses can produce some photographic brilliance (well, it’s also because eBay lets you acquire some second hand pieces at pretty decent prices). I’ve been cycling through my lenses attaching one to my D70 each day and bringing them to work. I’ve had varied success with taking pictures, as it depends on daily conditions for outdoor shots and the state of mind I’m at to be creative enough to think of frame something nice.

Will be in Brisbane a few days for the weekend (due to cheap flight tickets from Virgin Blue, made a spontaneous decision to go with friends on a visit), and maybe then I could take some spectacular shots. Heh, Sydney has made me realised that as a tourist, everything and anything can be interesting. Melbourne is the same, as I have come to realise and with the permission of time, you could take a walk in the city and find plenty to photograph. There are architecturally splendid arcades hidden between the CBD, as well as plenty of potted flowers giving a chance for interesting macro shots (these flowers are changed monthly by the local council, so there’s always a fresh variety to shoot).

Need to pick up that camera again soon.

One of my 50mm shots I didn’t post as the depth of field was a little too shallow, but it was the best I could do to preserve detail without camera shake. Heh, all my front page shots have been of food lately. That’s where my other interest lies.

Mundane Monday

That was the title that stuck this morning. Just the thought of having to get out of bed made it feel as such. Albeit, today was anything but mundane.

Day started off with the Millennium Stadium and the ‘friendly’ between Chelsea and Liverpool for the Community Shield match. It was a good match, with fantastic goals from both sides. Haven’t watched soccer in a while, so I absorbed as much of the match as possible. It’s amazing how managers can reshape teams to perform magic when everything clicks into gear. Liverpool is a club with rich history, and while not a personal favourite, they command respect from the rest of the league for being able to pull things off.

Had only four half hours sleep last night. Was especially sensitive to the alarm this morning and couldn’t ignore it to have a little longer shut eye. Not much of any highlights througout the day other than dinner, where Vyanne prepared an Italian styled dinner, with pumpkin soup, bread with peppers/olives/basil/mozarella, a pesto based pasta with prosciutto, a chicken dish and some blood orange dessert. Heh, amazing what she can cook up when she sets her mind to it.

Fell asleep with half a half empty cup of tea in my hand. I was that tired. Amazingly, it didn’t tip over.

Need to go catch up with sleep now.

One of Jerome’s latte art creations. It just looks effortless the way he does it. Heh.
