I realise that it’s more festive here in New York compared to Melbourne. It could be the heat, but I think it’s more to how Melbourne is. There is no sense of grandeur, everything is done with a muted effort. Here in NYC, everywhere I walk and go, I see Christmas decorations in abundance. People do get into the spirit of the season.
Heh, I have always balked at the idea of travelling into Manhattan from where I stay as I was too lazy to go explore. These days, I’m suddenly fired up with more passion to go take good photos, and made my way towards the city.
Stopped by at Union Square, and walked around the market there. There were plenty of crafts and odd bits to shop for. I stopped by one shop and tried some hot apple cider. It probably has ginger/cinnamon spice in it. It was nice and warm, but other than that, didn’t feel spectacular to me.

I then made my way slowup up 5th Avenue to the Rockefeller Building and was I surprised. NYC is generally crowded, but you don’t get more crowded than this. It was a snail’s pace moving through the hordes of people just to see the Christmas tree there.
The tree is massive, with wires attached to the building to prop it up. You can roughly estimate its height from the next picture down, where you see a glimpse of it peeking out beside the ice rink. That was only two thirds of the tree you see in the picture.

There was also a skating rink that they had put up just for the occasion and there was a long queue just to get in.

Like I said before, when they do decorations here, they go all the way. There was a line of angels with trumpets all the way leading towards the building, and tin soldiers lining the sides.

Heh, on my way back towards the subway, I had to dig through the smaller roads to bypass the waves of people roaming around. You had tourists and locals, and it was definitely more packed than I expected but it’s quite exciting, mingling with people and feeling the holiday season approaching.
