Just Do It

Busy spending the weekends moving house, so I don’t have very many new pictures as I don’t want to be hunkered down by my uber heavy DSLR while I was doing stuff over the weekend.

This was the decor at the vineyard we stopped by for mushroom hunting. There’s something about the shape of maple leaves that just makes it so interesting. There’s also the multicoloured plastic chairs that make the scene so surreal.

It was a productive weekend. Painted a few extra walls on Saturday with some help and did some shopping this afternoon. Heh, had some experience shopping for a fridge a few months back and am more familiar with the tactics of the salespeople. One needs to do some research before going shopping for if you don’t, you get overwhelmed with choices. Just a TV and a washing machine and you can have so many brands and ranges of items. Even just a 46″ TV can have many different features, from a Plasma screen or a LCD screen, or a LED edge lit LCD screen (which makes these models less than an inch thick), or a LCD screen with 50, 100 or 200 Hz refresh. The amount of details can be mind boggling, so you need to know what you want before going into a store, or the salesperson will bring you around in circles and they may also sell you something you do not need or want.

Searching online also has its benefits, so you know how far down you can negotiate the price to. Did better this time with the stuff we bought compared to the fridge as I had a good indication on what sort of price I could expect to bargain it down to. Bargaining is like any other exercise, that the more you practice, the better you become at it.

Overall was happy with our purchases this time round.

Now that I’m starting to look for a job again, I feel that working at a hospital has benefited me in ways I didn’t think about. Besides getting experience applying accounting concepts in my work, I have also learned to communicate with a variety of people, where in my previous job it was very limited in terms of contact. This extra amount of dealing with people has made me more confident in a variety of situations and I feel I can express myself better and get my point across.

Looking at jobs also made me review my dream to do photography as a job. That idea has somehow waned a bit, as every time I look at it, the more stumbling blocks I find I have to face. There are other problems you’d have to worry about as you go into this kind of work, like logistics, if you can’t reach your venue in time what can you do about it? So many little things that can happen, but they say you should just have an idea, and do it. It’s how I used to do things, and how I got good at things. I don’t do this as much these days, trying out things until I get it right. Then again, you are not held accountable for not delivering things that you try on your own, so it’s different. Heh, had more time back then anyway.

One keeps coming back to ideas they’ve had before. Besides shooting photos as a living, I think that post processing for actual photographers is also a line that one can consider. I do a pretty decent job post processing and I’m also looking to actively improve myself at taking photos again. It’s like running, you just need to push more, run out of steam, and the next time you try again, you know you can push that extra bit further.

Starting to rant now. Just have ideas, and the ambition and belief to do things. I’d really like to do more than try.

Starting June

birthday cake

Birthday cake with the cluttered background. This was a surprise birthday cake for a friend who is studying for a professional paper, hence the laptop and general mess. Sometimes pictures need a little context to give it interest.

Haven’t picked up the camera in a while so it was refreshing to just shoot some photos at the surprise.

Been rather busy of late, and I need to eat into my sleeping time just to get things done. It’s a personal choice, and it’s not something I’m too good at. Heh, been running on coffees just to keep me going throughout the day. Wake up tired, have a coffee, feel fine at work, go through a few instant coffees. Get home, have dinner, and feel like I can fall asleep at any moment. Make another coffee and I’m awake doing stuff until 1am before I go back to sleep. The cycle then repeats itself. I’m glad it’s nearly the weekend.

Job app went out Monday, had a phone call the next day, met up with agent the day after. Things seem to be going rather quickly these days. Work, socialising, personal efforts, the new house, the upcoming World Cup. Heh, life hasn’t been this hectic for a while. I sort of like it, just hope I don’t burn out in the process.

Went to fiddle with the iPad again today after work. It feels heavy now once you take into account the amount of time you spend holding it up. It’s still blazingly fast, surfing through pages, looking for directions on Google Maps and the sheer enjoyment of physically interacting with the screen, as opposed to using a mouse and keyboard for input. It feels so much more direct and having that layer of translation gone makes it feel so liberating.

Would still love to own one, but I could get away with using my netbook and buying a 3G dongle to connect to it. It would be the practical solution, but not the fun one. I’d argue against the financial aspects of procuring one as you cannot replace the experience by the amount of money you save, but that’s something else.

I’m not sure what to make of June. It’s cold, I might change jobs, I’m definitely moving to a new place, there’s the World Cup to keep me occupied.

Sometimes change can just come so swiftly and knock you off balance. Hope I’m still standing by the end of the month.
