Soccer Fanatic

on the way home

Woke up during the ride home from Mildura to capture this shot. Skies during hot days give off the most vibrant colours.

Just recently purchased a wired flash chord from eBay so I can try some off camera flash shots with still objects. I’ve been previously using the commander function on the on body flash to trigger my SB-800 but because it uses light to trigger the external flash, it over illuminates closeup subjects. Haven’t done any testing yet but I’m keen on using the reflective umbrella I have on a tripod to get a soft light on some subjects I will take.

* * *

Been up two days in a row at 430am to watch soccer. It was the 2nd leg of the Champion’s League quarterfinals and what a match between Chelsea and Liverpool. It started out steady enough, then silly errors from Chelsea saw Liverpool 2-0 up. Liverpool was trying to cut the deficit from their first leg 3-1 defeat by Chelsea and as this is Rafael Benitez’s team, anything is possible. Chelsea made it into the second half being only two goals down and with the substitution of Nicolas Anelka on, a cross and some fumbling by Reina and Chelsea suddenly have a goal. Another foul outside the penalty box and Alex converts with a screamer of a goal. It’s now 2-2 and once again Liverpool is chasing the game. The ball is going from one end to the other rapidly and Liverpool provides too much space for Lampard who cooly shoots pass Reina to make it 3-2. You’d think it’s all over for Liverpool but no, they strike 2 back in quick succession, making it 3-4. Just one more goal and they’d be through to the semi final. Some last ditch defending from Chelsea and suddenly they hit back with another goal, and ending the game with a 4-4 draw, winning the two legs of the tie with a 7-5 aggregate. It was definitely one of the more exhilarating matches in recent history. Chelsea now faces the all attacking Barcelona in the semi finals, it’s going to be another mouth watering match.

Got up early again this morning to see if Manchester United could beat Porto in their home ground. The statistics were stacked against them, with United always crashing out of the competition after drawing their first leg at home during the quarter finals. No English team has beat Porto in their home ground for the past 30 odd years. It seems daunting enough and the match starts of with United controlling the pace of the game. Nothing exciting and I’m just watching the match when a pass from Anderson to Ronaldo, who makes a few steps and hits the most spectacular goal I’ve seen in a long, long while. From 35 metres out he belts a ball just past the finger tips of the Porto keeper into the top left side of the goal netting. That wonder goal got United through to the semi final, who must now face Arsenal in another must see match. Heh, two more weeks before the two matches.

Heh, been sleeping at 1130pm the past couple of nights, waking up at 2am just to make sure I haven’t overslept and dragging myself out of bed at 430am to go to Ken’s place to catch the action. I’ve been promising to go to his place since the beginning of the year to catch these early morning Champion’s League matches but have so far failed to deliver on those promises. Then suddenly I decide to watch two matches in a row. Well, it’s already April and it all ends next month when a flurry of matches will occur and a long break until August before all the excitement starts again.

Not Again

Again I miss a 5am World Cup match.

The only consolation I have is watching Germany’s dreams end in the final 2 minutes of extra time, where the first goal was masterfully done, and the second was just and all out attack on by the Germans and first class finishing from the guy in the blue shirt (didn’t catch his name).

Heh, I think I haven’t fully recovered from the first two weeks of the Beautiful Game. I heard my alarm this morning, but it was cold, and my pulled my blankets over my face, and started dreaming about random things. It didn’t even occur to me that I had to wake up early for the semifinal between Germany and Italy. It was nice and snug until I realised just before my alarm rang (my body clock has a knack of knowing when the proper time to wake up is) that I was supposed to watch a soccer match.

My friend said I ought to be bleary eyed and looking worn when going to work. Heh, only problem is work can be quite demanding on the concentration and getting through a day’s work would be downright torture if I wasn’t rested enough (this is from personal experience as well).

So far all my preferred teams have been knocked out, except for Brazil of course. They have their huge fan base, but they’ve won it so many times, it was about time France brought them back to reality.

Tomorrow night I favour France’s Zidane over Portugal’s Deco to make an impact. Although ironically, when it comes to Pro Evolution Soccer on the Playstation 2, Deco is still my most prolific scorer of goals. Heh. The one thing that has it going for Portugal is Scolari, their manager. He is legend, winning the World Cup for Brazil 4 years ago and just missed by a hair in the Euro 2004 finals against Greece with his current team. Getting this far into the tournament, Portugal is a far lesser team compared to the likes of Argentina, Spain and Brazil. Sure they have big names like Figo, Ronaldo (Cristiano), Deco etc, but they aren’t as celebrated as the players from other teams. You do see Scolari barking orders on the technical line (or was it touch line?) and pushing his players on. This is the spirited display you expect to win matches.

Heh, will I miss another 5am match?

Recess

It’s been one of those weekends. Heh, it’s a Sunday night and I’ve been struggling with my Foreign Exchange assignment. I’m not one with long attention spans but this is the closest I’ve ever come to doing most of an assignment before it’s due. Only 2 odd questions left, and I have another 4 or so hours to do it before England play Ecuador in the round of 16 for the World Cup tonight. Australia plays Italy tomorrow night and it’s one of the more anticipated matches. Australia is the odd team out in the this last group of 16. Barely has it reached to the group stages for 32 years, and now it’s among the world’s giants of the footballing nations. It’s an amazing phenomenon, and many countries have adopted Australia as the team to support besides their own nations. Heh, maybe it’s to do with Australia being home to the lovable kangaroo, or maybe it’s that never say die attitude. They have come twice from behind in their qualification matches against Japan and Croatia and now they will play Italy on the big stage. Guus Hiddink, their coach, has a legendary status now for changing teams and making them believe in themselves. He brought South Korea to the semi finals four years ago and it would be just amazing if he can do that for Australia as well.

Back to the assignment. Heh, Vyanne has helped a lot in getting me to focus on my assignment, and I’ve actually sat through long enough to work out the answers to the questions. It’s not easy for me, even if the concepts can ge be grasped. Sounds contradictory? Yes. I don’t say anything is easy until I can explain the concepts back to you inverted and inside out. Everything I know about the topic is hanging by threads now and I’m still trying to balance the ideas in my head to come out with proper answers.

Really should get back to it now. *breathes in*. Just need to hold out another four hours. Heh.

Note: Wanted to name this post Intermission, but I do have a post with that title dating back to 11 April 2004. The odd bits of things I remember.
